Team Lakay’s Jhanlo Mark Sangiao earns 2nd ONE Championship win, $50K bonus at ‘ONE 164’ in Pasay, Philippines

“The Machine” Jhanlo Mark Sangiao, 20, of La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines was one of the winners at “ONE 164“. It marked the Igorot mixed martial artist’s second victory in ONE Championship.

Training out of Team Lakay in La Trinidad, Sangiao was one of the nine Filipino MMA fighters who competed at “ONE 164”, which was held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on December 3, 2022. The card featured three Muay Thai contests and seven MMA matches.

In the fourth bout of the evening, Sangiao fought “Tenacity” Anacleto Lauron, 30, of Davao City, Philippines at a catch weight of 156.25 lbs. The latter was a last-minute replacement.

Sangiao was supposed to fight “El Rasta” Matias Farinelli, 38, of Buenos Aires, Argentina in the bantamweight division. However, the latter was removed from the card for an undisclosed reason and was replaced by Lauron, who finished in the Top 8 at “ONE Warrior Series Philippines” Season 1.

Mohamad Sulaiman served as the referee of the catchweight bout between Sangiao and Lauron at “ONE 164”. The referee stopped the fight after 1 minute and 48 seconds and raised the hand of the Team Lakay fighter, who submitted the “ONE Warrior Series Philippines” Season 1 via rear-naked choke.

The victory improved Sangiao’s professional MMA record to 5 wins and 0 loss. Impressing ONE Championship chief executive officer Chatri Sityodtong, 51, with how they finished their respective opponents, Sangiao and two other “ONE 164” fighters received a $50,000 performance bonus each.

During the post-fight press conference, Chatri said Sangiao has the potential to become a world champion. “Samingpri” Tagir Khalilov, 29, of Yekaterinburg, Russia and Sangiao’s Team Lakay teammate “The Juggernaut” Jeremy Pacatiw, 26, of Kapangan, Benguet were the other two performance bonus recipients.

Sangiao successfully made his professional MMA debut on May 5, 2018. He earned his second and third wins on April 27, 2019 and December 14, 2019.

On December 3, 2021, Sangiao made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE: Winter Warriors 2” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. He submitted “The Great King” Paulus Lumihi, 34, of Jakarta, Indonesia via rear-naked choke after 1 minute and 41 seconds in the first round.
