  • Denice Zamboanga earns split decision win over Lin Heqin
  • Tye Rutolo, Reug Reug also victorious in undercard matches

In his first fight back home in the Philippines in nearly three years, Filipino mixed martial arts (MMA) icon Eduard Folayang suffered a heartbreaking defeat as he fell to Brazilian striker Edson "Panico" Marques by second-round TKO on the undercard of ONE on Prime Video 5 on Friday, December 2.

A two-time ONE lightweight world champion, Folayang entered the ONE Circle with hopes of revitalizing his MMA career with a big win at home.

It was a good start for Folayang, who was able to push the pace and hit Marques with some solid punches and kicks to the leg.

The Brazilian striker was able to find his groove and wobble Folayang as the round ended.

Past the midway point of the second round, Folayang had Marques backed-up against the cage wall, but the Brazilian was able to reverse positions.

Marques broke away from a clinch and landed a right cross straight to Folayang's chin, sending the Filipino star crashing face-first onto the canvass.

Marques landed a few more punches right as the official stepped in to stop the bout.

The stoppage came in at the 2:53 mark of the second round.

It was another disappointing result for the native of Baguio City, Philippines, who has lost his last five MMA bouts, and seven of his last eight. He drops to 22-13 in his career.

Marques, meanwhile, picks up his second straight win under the ONE banner and moves to 11-2.

What's more, he takes home a $50,000 performance bonus.

Denice Zamboanga

In earlier action, Manila's own Denice Zamboanga kicked off the ONE on Prime Video 5 card with a close split decision victory over China's Lin Heqin.

More known for her elite-level grappling, Zamboanga showcased a much-improved striking game as she dropped Lin in the first round and was able to use her crisp striking and movement to punish Heqin throughout the bout.

Lin was able to keep it close, however, as she used her reach to land significant strikes of her own.

In the end, it was the hometown bet who got the nod on two of the three judges' scorecards for the close win.

"We worked on striking a lot when I trained and moved to my brother's gym, I want to show them that I have striking too," Zamboanga said during the post-fight interview. "We worked on my straight when she comes forward because I know she has the advantage in her reach, so I just kept working on my right hand."

Zamboanga also shared who she wanted to face inside the ONE Circle next, none other than No. 1-ranked atomweight contender and her close friend Stamp Fairtex.

"I have interest in taking the ranked No. 1 [atomweight], which is Stamp [Fairtex], my friend, my closest friend. If I beat her, I can challenge the champion."

With the win, Zamboanga improves to 9-2 in her career and returns to the win column following back-to-back defeats to Seo Hee Ham.

Lin, meanwhile, absorbed her second-straight defeat and dropped to 15-5-1.

In a heavyweight clash, Senegal's "Reug Reug" Oumar Kane grappled his way to a unanimous decision victory over Uzbekistan's Jasur Mirzamukhamedov.

Kane imposed his will and kept Mirzamukhamedov grounded for much of the three-round contest to earn a clear-cut decision win.

Kane picks up his second straight victory and improves to 5-1 in his career. Mirzamukhamedov meanwhile, suffers the first loss of his MMA career and drops to 6-1.

In a catchweight submission grappling contest, Tye Rutolo of the United States submitted former ONE featherweight world champion Marat Gafurov of Russia.

After a stunning back-and-forth display of grappling from the two competitors, Rutolo caught Gafurov in a triangle armbar, but he modified it into a wrist lock to get the tap at the 5:09 mark of the bout.

The skillful grappling display earned Rutolo another $50,000 performance bonus.

Rutolo gets his second-straight submission grappling victory under the ONE banner.

Back in May, Rutolo defeated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Garry Tonon by d'arce choke.
