Indonesia's first appearance at the 18th Asian Games ended in a rip-roaring 4-0 victory over Chinese Taipei in men's football Group A action at the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday evening.
After a goalless first half in front of a noisy and excitable home crowd, Indonesia scored four times without reply in the second half to claim all three points and give the host country the feel-good factor before the official start of the Asian Games on August 18.
Stefano Lilipaly opened the scoring in the 67th minute with a near-post header from Febri Hariyadi's in-swinging left-footed free kick from the right.
Alberto "Beto" Goncalves added a second with a slick finish three minutes later to make it 2-0 before Stefano scored his second of the night with an acrobatic overhead kick from a left-wing cross on 76 minutes.
Substitute Muhammad Hargianto added a fourth goal in injury time to send the crowd home in high spirits and give Indonesia the perfect start to their Asian Games campaign and hopefully some momentum for other sports to build on.
Palestine lead Group A with four points from two games, followed by Indonesia and Hong Kong, China both with three points from one game. Chinese Taipei are fourth with one point from two games and Laos are at the bottom after two defeats.
The top two teams in the six groups automatically qualify for the Round of 16, along with the four third-placed teams with the best record.
Among the crowd was the President of the Asian Games organising committee INASGOC, Erick Thohir.
