Several students from Haley’s Martial Arts competed in the national karate qualifier at River Valley High School in Yuba City on Sunday.
Elijah Sanchez and Emerson Soto won a gold in sparing, a silver in weapons and a bronze in forms. Serena Vue won a gold in weapons and a bronze in sparing. Lilly Holbrook won a silver in forms and weapons and a bronze in sparing. Cooper Howard and Brenden Wells won silver in weapons and bronze in forms. Valente Ruvalcaba won silver in forms. Brandon Fealk won a silver in weapons. Riley Treanor won a silver in sparing and a bronze in forms. Phoenix Naylor won a silver in sparing. Jackson Jordan and Ulysses Sanchez won bronze in sparing.
Rowing
Covered Bridge Regatta >> The Table Mountain Rowing Club competed with 10 boats in the Covered Bridge Regatta for racing this past weekend. The Women Masters Novice 4+ took first place with rowers Carolyn Steele, Jean Murphy-Atkins, Teri Long, Sidne Gray, and coxswain Rosa Nelson.
For the men, junior rower Lluis Sala won the 1x event, and the Men Junior 4+ took third place with rowers Lluis Sala, William Doornbos, Jack Appleby, Edward Mills and coxswain Rosa Nelson.
The Women Junior Novice 4x took fourth place with rowers Annemarie Hoff, Jasmine Bucago, Ellie Bizjak, Rosa Nelson, and coxswain Edward Mills.
Beach volleyball
PV at Ponderosa dual, Folsom tourney >> The Pleasant Valley High beach volleyball team went 1-1 in a double dual at Ponderosa High School of Shingle Springs. Ponderosa won the first dual 4-1, with Jordan Bennett and Makenna Joyce getting PV its only victory 22-20, 21-14.
In the second dual PV won 4-1 with wins by Joyce and Abby Schimmel, Bennett and Madi Gray, and Sydney Mt Joy and Claire Jacobsen. This makes PV 5-1 in team duals this season.
At the Folsom Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League Tournament No. 3, PV won the team title going 17-8 to maintain its standings in the IBVL to play in the May 19 team championships.
Schimmel and Colette Florentin finished third with a 6-1 record and wins over Oakmont, Folsom and Colfax. Gray and Jordan Bennett finished fifth with a 5-2 record and wins over Colfax, Oakmont and Folsom. Jade Bennett and Mt Joy went 3-3 with wins over three Oakmont teams. Jacobsen and Jenna Matthews went 3-2 with wins over Folsom, Oakmont and Colfax.
Basketball
Flight at Springs Hoops Challenge >> The Chico Flight freshman boys basketball team dropped all three of its games in the top division of the NBBA Ultimate Spring Hoops Challenge in Walnut Creek.
In the first game the Chico Flight played NBBA-Pederson and found themselves down by double digits twice and ultimately lost the game, 48-44. Jasten Del Carlo had 24 points while Stephen Schaeffer added 11.
Chico played the Flight Elite Black in the second game of the round robin tournament and fell 58-50. Schaefer led the way with 11 points while Quentin Thomas added nine points. Zion Frison and Brock Butterfield each chipped in seven points respectively in the loss.
In the final game of the tournament, the Flight faced NBBA-Prescott and lost 46-36. Del Carlo lead the Flight with nine points. Schaefer had eight points, and Thomas chipped in six points.
Norcal Ducks at Chico showcase >> The Norcal Ducks JV boys AAU basketball team took second place in the 2018 Showtime Hoops Springtime Invitational Showcase this past weekend in Chico.
They beat Cal Elite 67-30 and Lathrop Thunder 69-48 on their way to the championship game against the Davis Hot Shots in which they lost 62-50. Coach Courtney Bobinger credited Nate Paddock, Michael Syn, and Juan Nava with standout performances.
Gymnastics
Oroville at regionals >> The Level 8 Oroville Gymnastics girls competed at the 2018 Regional competition in Reno, Nevada this past weekend. The competition included the top gymnasts from California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.
Abbie Egbert placed seventh on vault, second on balance beam and sixth in the all around competition. Hannah Pritchard finished eighth on floor, seventh on vault and balance beam, second on uneven bars, and second in the all around competition.
