Swansea City superstar Andre Ayew swept the two biggest awards in Ghana on Saturday night when he was named the Sports Personality of the Year and the Footballer of the Year.

The deputy captain of the Black Stars swept the top awards at the 41st MTN SWAG awards - the biggest in the country by sports writers.

Ayew edged past his captain Asamoah Gyan to win both awards for his heroics for both club and country last year.

The lion-hearted midfielder was  named for playing a key role in 2015 as helped the Black Stars to a second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, only to be beaten by Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

The 26-year-old excelled in the tournament where he finished as the top scorer after netting three times for the Black Stars.

His national team-mates Gyan and Harrison Afful were in the hunt for the two top awards but the writers decided on Ayew thanks to his performances for both club and country.

Gyan, who is the Black Stars captain, was given a special reward for his philanthropic work for the under privileged in Ghana.

Other award winners included Ashanti Gold captain Eric Opoku who was adjudged the Premier League player of the year by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana.

Black Queens Coach Yusif Basigi who also doubles as the head coach of Sekodi Hasaacas and Hasaacas Ladies was named as the Coach of the year with Portia Boakye winning the female footballer of the year.
